Memorial Day
Summer's here! Happy Memorial Day! Mine started with a visit to Memphis National Cemetary with my son as we posted flags on the graves. A parade, some bagpipes and over 47000 markers.
Did you know? It was originally called Decoration Day. It was started in 1868 to commemorate the sacrifices of civil war soldiers by decorating their graves. Several Southern states still set aside a day for honoring the Confederate dead, which is usually called Confederate Memorial Day:
In 2007, Northwest Airlines no longer observes this as a paid holiday for it's employees. Hmm?

- Virginia: Last Monday in May
