Memorial Day

Summer's here! Happy Memorial Day! Mine started with a visit to Memphis National Cemetary with my son as we posted flags on the graves. A parade, some bagpipes and over 47000 markers.Did you know? It was originally called Decoration Day. It was started in 1868 to commemorate the sacrifices of civil war soldiers by decorating their graves. Several Southern states still set aside a day for honoring the Confederate dead, which is usually called Confederate Memorial Day:
  • Mississippi: Last Monday in April
  • Alabama: Fourth Monday in April
  • Georgia: April 26
  • North Carolina: May 10
  • South Carolina: May 10
  • Louisiana: June 3
  • Tennessee (Confederate Decoration Day): June 3
  • Texas (Confederate Heroes Day): January 19
  • Virginia: Last Monday in May
In 1971, Congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday.
In 2007, Northwest Airlines no longer observes this as a paid holiday for it's employees. Hmm?
OK, OK. Back to all things music. June 14th. Collierville town square. Be there or be ...
